The Encyclopedia of Graphics File Formats README ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to GFF, The Encyclopedia of Graphics File Formats. Between the day when the final PostScript files were sent off for printing and the day on which the final CD was cut, a few changes occurred in the GFF product. This file, and the readme files for each of the platforms, describes those few changes. This file provides an updated quick reference for installing GFF. Please also read the readme.txt file for your platform. To install GFF: On Windows: 1. Install Spyglass Mosaic 2.11 by running: \pc\mosaic\disk1\setup.exe on the CD-ROM. 2. Install GFF for Windows 3.1 by running: \pc\win31\setup.exe or install GFF for Windows 95/NT by running: \pc\win95\setup.exe on the CD-ROM. 3. Run GFF by starting the installed GFF application. For more information about Windows, please read \pc\readme.txt. On a Macintosh: 1. Install Spyglass Mosaic 2.11 by double-clicking the "mosaic" self-extracting archive file in the Mac folder on the CD-ROM. 2. Install GFF by double-clicking the "GFF" self-extracting archive fine in the Mac folder on the CD-ROM. Please note: when the book was printed, we assumed it would be possible to run GFF directly off of the CD-ROM. For technical reasons, this turned out to be a problem so the GFF program was packaged into a self-extracting archive. GFF is quite small, so installing it on your hard disk should not be a problem. 3. Run GFF by double-clicking the installed GFF icon. If you have never run Spyglass Mosaic on your system, you may need to run Mosaic once by hand before GFF will be able to start Mosaic for you. If GFF complains that it "cannot register protocol," please run Mosaic before running GFF. You should have to do this only once. For more information about the Macintosh, please read readme.txt in the Mac folder. Under UNIX: 1. Install Spyglass Mosaic 2.11 by extracting: /unix//mosaic/mosaic-ora-211.tar.Z into /usr/local/Enhanced_Mosaic on your system and follow the installation instructions provided by Spyglass. 2. Install GFF by running /unix//install.gff. Please note: in order to install GFF, you must be able to write to the directories where you want to install it. Typically, these directories reside under /usr/local and therefore you must be root in order to install GFF. 3. Run GFF by running "gff" at the shell prompt. You may have to update your shell's command hash table by running "rehash" or "hash -r" first. Alternatively, you can specify the complete pathname of the installed gff executable. For more information about UNIX, please read /unix/readme.txt.
